The Parlour Studios and Project Space.
'Culture should be regarded as the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group, and that it encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs.’

About Us
The Parlour is a new initiative from Mapalim, extending its cultural services within the community through its dedicated programme of cultural events, arts educational and outreach work. The Parlour’s mission is to act as an interface between emerging artists and the community. It will provoke, challenge and inspire our local community to engage with art and artists to engage with communities. We encourage and ask artists and creative professionals to join us in a cultural programme that supports community engagement with the arts, an arts education programme and the emerging artist. We aim to support the following strands for development:
The Arts: We aim to promote appreciation and ensure the access of the visual arts.
Community engagement: We aim to develop the potential for the community to engage in and contribute to the emerging arts scene. We believe community engagement holds the potential to provoke, challenge and inspire Artists and enhance their work.
Arts Education: We aim to involve the community, including families, schools and colleges, in sustainable arts education programmes and projects. Parlour Artists will be encouraged to develop arts education experiences for the local population.
The Artist: We aim to support artists and creative professionals by providing gallery, project space and studio facilities within which they can exhibit and develop their work. The project space will provide opportunities for promising, emerging artists to exhibit and perform their work in a supportive environment.
The Cultural Programme
Curated by Kasia Kwiatkowska the cultural program held in the Project Space invites creative professionals from a diverse range of disciplines in visual arts, music, dance and theatre to produce and exhibit innovative, creative and engaging work, of a high standard. Interested artists and performers are requested to follow the application procedures whereby a selection will be made by the Curator and the arts committee. There are two application deadlines left for 2008: September 1st and Dec 1st.
Should you be interested in applying for exhibiting or performing as part of the cultural programme please contact the Artistic Co-ordinator Kasia Kwiatkowska for the relevant guidelines and application form at: kasia.kwiatkowska@mapalim.com
Studios & Project Space
The Studios consist of two large spaces. Studio 185 (28.56m2) offers an individual space for a creative organisation whilst Studio 187 (56.45m2) offers a more affordable rate for visual artists sharing with others.
The Parlour Gallery and Project Space is also available for Sessional Project Space Hire (41.52m2) at affordable rates for creative professionals. The Parlour is 45m2 white walled space with track lights, as well as lots of natural light. It can be used for drama, music, dance rehearsals as well as workshops, seminars and lectures. The aim of this is to encourage other creative practices to respond to the exhibition positively, possibly resulting in a cross fertilisation of ideas, interests and shared ambitions. There is an application procedure for Project Space Hire whereby all users are requested to become Parlour members.
Should you be interested in studio or project space hire, please contact the External Communications Administrator Dave Joinson for the relevant guidelines, price lists and application forms at: dave.joinson@mapalim.com

History of Queens Crescent
Built around 1866, Queen’s Crescent and the surrounding area has a history of community activity and activism that continues into the present day. It was in nearby Coniston House that the St Pancras Rent Strike siege took place in the late 50s, and past residents have included George Orwell.
Today the Crescent, part of a Neighbourhood Renewal Area, is home to a number of diverse community organisations. Queen’s Crescent market has been a weekly occurrence for over 100 years, and is still a melting pot for people of different social and cultural backgrounds, giving the area a distinctive buzz.
